It used to be that when someone said the words bathroom cabinet, they were invariably talking about the same thing. This referred to a little cabinet that was hanging in the bathroom to hold aspirins, liniments and other medicinal needs.
Almost every bathroom had some type of small wall mounted metal shelving unit fastened on the wall. You’d find these little metal bathroom cabinets above nearly every sink, complete with a mirrored door. Functional, yes; but leaving a little to be desired in terms of design or visual interest.
We’ve Come A Long Way Since Then
The way that our bathroom cabinets look and even the way that we use them has changed a lot since then. There are now a nearly limitless variety of styles and colors available to consumers which are stylish and yes, still very much functional.
No longer are you limited to a choice of one color, one style and one size. You can now find bathroom cabinets made from plastic, chrome, polished nickel, bamboo, or wicker to add interest and flair to any bath. There are also many different styles to choose from which can make this once strictly functional element into something which can add a lot of aesthetic appeal to your bathroom.
Vanity Bathroom Cabinets Are A Popular Option
We’re all familiar with the bathroom vanity cabinet – the cabinets which house the bathroom sink and sink fixtures, as well as serving the purpose of hiding the pipes and intake valves. There is of course a vanity counter top, which you can find in many different materials; marble and tile are especially popular choices. There are usually 2 or more doors in this cabinet that allow access to an under-sink storage area, and a large number of these bathroom cabinets will have pull out drawers included.

Bathroom Cabinet Styles: American and European
There are two distinctively different styles of bathroom cabinets that include both American and European.
The American cabinets generally rely on face-framing to complete the appearance. This means that the doors, mirrors, or some other type of covering frames the front of the shelves giving it a closed appearance. With a European style bath cabinet, the shelving is open and there are only minimal bits of trim noted along the shelving framework.
Bathroom Cabinet Selections
When looking for your perfect bathroom cabinets there are stock, custom, and modular units to consider. With a stock cabinet item, the piece has been produced for the mass market and these will only come in set sizes and styles. While these are typically the cheapest cabinets, there is the disadvantage that they are available in a limited selection of colors, sizes and styles.
Modular pieces have a wider selection of sizes and styles and can be combined with a number of other different pieces. However, if you want your bathroom cabinet to be truly your own, then a custom bathroom cabinet is the only way to go.
